The angel of the Lord encamps around those who
fear Him, and rescues them. ( Psalm. 34:7)
The outbreak of corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has
created a global health crisis that has had a deep impact
on the way we perceive our world and our everyday lives.
Not only the rate of infection and patterns of transmission
threatens our sense of action, but the safety measures put
in place to contain the spread of the virus also require social distancing by refraining from doing what is inherently human, which is to find solace in the company of others.
‘Some one ate something in china and we are washing the hands…’
The invasions of the terrible monster Covid 19 silenced the entire ambiance. The roads without transportation, the streets and markets without people. Schools and colleges are being closed; No park, no party…. everywhere the silence of the tomb. All are trouncing indoors from this invisible villain corona virus. Hotels, shops and all sorts of work places are empty of workforce. The face of the earth experienced the silence of a post war field or the stillness followed by a torrential rain.
However, on the other side, the atmosphere became loaded with the aroma of the nature, sweet scent of lime and Neem flowers instead of the smell of the putrid garbage. The extra busy streets and highways became like an abandoned football court. The ever persecuted mother earth that bore every atrocity of mankind, is now relaxing without air pollution or noise pollution etc. Families and its members became closer and their bond of love renewed and returned to its place. Parents and children found time to be together and even invented new games. Junk food vanished from the menu; instead, homemade delicious healthy food occupied the dining table.
The reason for these drastic changes in life style is the arrival of global pandemic called corona virus. The invisible monster, born in China that stretched out its venomous hands towards the innocent people and crushed their lives and dreams, disseminating fear and anxiety in every face devoid of any colour, cultural bigotry and made them dilapidate the public places and find refuge in the realm of their own homes.
Thousands lost their lives, millions are undergoing treatment and the entire world is under quarantine. Lock down without any means of transport, theater, gym, playgrounds and stadiums. No fast food, no ice cream parlor not even barbers to give a haircut. Nothing to entice the superfluous need of man. Everyone is satisfied with minimum necessities. Hindus, Christians and Muslims every one raises their hearts and hands to God to unfetter the suffering humanity from the clutches of the Covid 19.
Corona the ogre continues its assault on every country and continent. No guided missile technology or drones can stop it. No military might can battle it. No political influence can slow it down. No money can bribe it. No person’s rank will matter to the inevitably spreading COVID-19. Our inability to conquer something so microcosmic, that we would not even be able to see it without special equipment. Yet, with all of our technology, science, and resources, we literally cannot stop it. This is a sobering moment for anyone who dares to reflect on the greater meaning behind all of what appears to be chaos. God is showing us His might, and how truly fragile and weak the human is before Him. No matter what we build, no matter how strong we believe we are, no matter what advances we make in science, God always has been and always will be greater than everything. Be still and know that I am God. This is one thing that unites the human race before God, our weakness, and he here comes the promises ‘Behold, I have given you power to tread underfoot serpents and scorpions” (Lk. 10;19)
The only remedy to block the spread of this deadly plague was a block down. It was the need of the time, suggested by the United Nations organization and imposed and implemented by the Central and state Governments, blocked the flow of life; a sudden halt hit the mankind. Alas! The consequence badly struck the lives of the daily labors, auto drivers, coolies, domestic workers, and petty shopkeepers. Looking at the hungry stricken faces of the children mothers sobbed, fathers remained helpless.
Yes, it was the time for action……for all those who had a little sensitive heart. Individuals, organizations and institutions came up with community kitchen, packed lunch and provision kits. Considering the number of the people who needed our assistance, our help was only a drop in the ocean, but still it is something…. While many share their surplus with the poor, various gave up their one-day meal to feed the hungry. Our Provincial Superior and her team called us for action and all the communities came up with their contribution like the five little barley loves of the poor little boy in the Gospel of John, and distributed to the local people.
God shall supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. (Philp. 4; 19). The ‘Salvation Army’ (Medical Science, Social workers and scientist) came to rescue the suffering humanity but no real remedy so far found. There are archeologists who dig into old and not so old books and bring up something. What came as a huge surprise to many is what an American psychic called Sylvia Browne, (died in 2013) has said in her book called “End of Days Predictions and Prophecies about the End of the World, published in 2008. She mentions the year and the nature of the disease quite accurately. “In around 2020, a severe pneumonia like illness will spread throughout the globe, attacking the lungs and the bronchial tubes and resisting all human treatments.” In addition, she tells that more than the illness, its desertion will be surprising. It will vanish as quickly as it appeared and attack again ten years later.
“For God loved the world so much, that He gave his only Son….(Jn.3:16)
For God everything has a plan, even the death of His only beloved Son was to bring the humankind closer to God, to reduce the distance between man and God by building a bridge. Now, the whole world is under the lockdown from 14th March to 3rd May 40 days ……or more ? So the people who have faith, those who consider Holy Bible as their Magna Carta, these are signs that tell us something. In the Gospel of St. Luke Jesus depicts the sentiments of father who always wait for his son who alienated himself from the abode of love; he embraces and receives him back to the right of Son ship, when he repented and returned to him. Here Jesus unfurls the heart of God who loves the mankind with the tenderness of a Mother’s heart and the rigorousness of a father but always in wait for our return, in return to our own genuine seats of daughters and sons of God.
In these days of lock down, many changes have taken place. Some of them are that we learnt to live a simple life and we recognized our nothingness, and we acknowledged the greatness of God and our need for him. Therefore, is this lock down a time given by God for our self improvement? No one knows. But as a child of God, let us use our time to lighten the burden of our hearts by admitting our mistakes and turn to God for mercy because he is full of compassion and love. So as to give a helping hand to the poor, recognizing our common brotherhood in Jesus Christ, who taught us to call God our Father; Let us place all our needs before him with out any fear, because he listens to us and comes to our aid at the right time. Hope is the fruit of faith so believe what God promises through out the Bible, for example in Psalm 91, we read “upon you no evil shall fall, no plague approach where you dwell.” So what do we want more! Let us abandon ourselves in the strong loving hands of our Abba, who wants us to resemble ourselves as his true sons and daughters. Remember the song written by Carroll Roberson and sung by Elvis Presley:
One pair of hands formed the mountains, One pair of hands formed the sea.
One pair of hands healed the sick, One pair of hands raised the dead.
Those hands are so strong, so when life goes wrong,
Put your faith in the one pair of hands.
